Updated: Apr 19

Are you ready to dive into the vibrant world of event planning with a one-week summer course this July?

Wondering what your week might look like? Who you'll meet? What you'll do? How you'll learn?

Summer Students 2023

Here's a peek into your immersive summer course - a gateway to the dynamic events industry, offering a blend of academic rigor, practical insights, and networking opportunities, all set against the picturesque backdrop of the Royal Docks on the ExCeL London campus and from our summer course training venue - Novotel Excel London.

Let’s embark on a detailed journey through your upcoming summer course!

Arrival and Check-In: The Prelude to Your Adventure

For those who have embraced the full experience by opting for a residential package, your adventure begins a day early. Arrive at your hotel located on the ExCel London campus and check in any time after 3 PM. This is the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in the beautiful dockside location, settle into your new surroundings, and enjoy a restful night's sleep before your amazing week kicks off. It’s your first step into a week that promises not only learning but also unforgettable memories and new friendships.

Day 1: Monday 1st July - A Warm Welcome to Your Future in Events

Your journey officially begins from 9:45 AM with arrival and registration at the Novotel ExCeL London, preparing you for a 10:00 AM start.

The day then kicks off with a welcome and induction session, where you'll meet fellow students and teachers from across all the summer courses running that week. It's a golden opportunity to forge connections with peers from the UK and overseas, and familiarise yourself with the educators and school managers who will guide you through this exhilarating week.

At 10.30 you'll head off to your class for your first session with your Lecturer who will walk you through the roles and responsibilities of a planner in the specialism you've chosen to study, and provide an introduction to the industry, its structure, rewards, challenges and opportunities.

They'll also introduce your course research project and make sure you're clear on what you'll need to do to pass. Your Programme Leader will refer back to the project throughout the week so you start applying your new skills to the project tasks as part of your learning experience. (Don't worry, your project is due one month after course completion, so you also have plenty of time to work on it after your programme)

After lunch you'll get started on more in-depth learning on your subject area with your Lecturer.

4.00pm with classes over for the day, you're invited to attend our Summer Welcome Reception in the Novotel Lounge Bar at 4.30pm.

Join us for a complimentary welcome drink and more opportunities to meet and mix with students from your own and other classes, and with the school's educators and managers. It's our way of making sure that you'll have a group of familiar faces from the school to support you through your week, and to get to know your fellow participants in a relaxed and informal environment.

Below are a few shots from past social events and welcome receptions.

Day 2: Tuesday 2nd July - Engaging Classes and Practical Learning

After the excitement of the first day, Tuesday brings you back to the heart of your studies. The classes are designed to be both engaging and interactive, ensuring that every lesson is not just a lecture but a platform for active learning and participation. Your dedicated lecturers are committed to making each session informative, stimulating, and relevant to your career progression in events.

Day 3: Wednesday 3rd July - Exploring the Heart of London’s Event Scene

Wednesday stands out as the highlight of your week - a day dedicated to exploring central London's iconic event venues. This unique venture out of the classroom and into the real world is not just an educational tour; it's an opportunity to breathe life into your studies. You'll visit locations and organisations directly related to your core studies, allowing theory to meet practice in the most inspiring way. Moreover, it's an exceptional chance to network with leading London event professionals, potentially opening doors to future opportunities.

Below are a few highlights from past site tours and excursions.

NB. If you're doing a non-event, 1-week summer course like leadership and management, or digital marketing, then instead of the site tours, you may benefit from a guest speaker in your field of study or an excursion or activity where you can apply your skills.

Days 4 & 5: Thursday 4th and Friday 5th July - Deep Dives and Future Steps

The focus shifts back to the classroom on Thursday and Friday, as you delve deeper into your subjects and continue to work on topics that will support your project work. Your lecturers will be by your side, ensuring you grasp all necessary concepts and methodologies to excel in your project.

Your final session on Friday afternoon offers a forward-looking session on next steps, equipping you with valuable insights and advice for your career path in the rewarding world of events.

Refreshments & WiFi

Tea and coffee are provided in your classroom and you can access free WiFi at the Novotel.

What About Lunch?

Lunch is not included but there are a vast array of options to meet all budgets across the ExCeL campus.

Heading to the right as you exit the Novotel, you'll find the Fox Hotel, or head into ExCeL's boulevard for a range of food and beverage outlets.

Head to the right as you exit the Novotel and within five minutes walk you'll find cafes, restaurants (try Al Masar for Lebanese), food-trucks and snack shops, many with budget lunch deal options (e.g. Tesco Express, Fratellis and NISA).

Most of the on-campus hotels also offer restaurants with lunch menus with Good Hotel, and Crowne Plaza all close by.

Beyond the Classroom: Enjoying the Royal Docks

The Event School London’s summer course isn't just about academic achievement; it’s also about experiencing the vibrancy of London. Our training venue, Novotel Excel London, is nestled in the stunning dockside location of the Royal Docks, offering breathtaking views and a serene environment for study and relaxation. For those opting for the residential package, the convenience of having accommodation steps away from the classroom means you’ll never worry about being late. After class, explore the area's plethora of restaurants, bars, cafes, and activities, making every moment of your stay enriching and enjoyable.
